Things to do in Saarbrucken

If you are wondering, “Is Saarbrücken worth visiting?” – it’s time to take out all your worries because I am going to share with you the best things to do and see in this area of Germany.

1. Ludwigskirche

Address: Am Ludwigspl. 18, 66117 Saarbrücken.

Ludwigskirche is located in old Saarbrücken, the old city center. The Lutheran baroque-style church is considered to be one of the most beautiful Protestant churches in Germany.

The Church was originally constructed in 1762 by Friedrich von Gärtner, and takes pride of place in the rectangular plaza called Ludwigsplatz.

After being completely destroyed in World War II, Ludwigskirche was rebuilt true to its original form.

2. Saarbrucken Castle

Address: Schloßpl. 15, 66119 Saarbrücken.

Aside from Ludwigskirche, Saarbrucken Castle is the most-visited attraction in the town.

According to historical sources, the existence of Saarbrucken Castle dates back to the year 999. Over the centuries, a few different castles were built on the original site, with a Renaissance castle built in the 17th century.

That castle was destroyed by imperial troops in 1677, then a new baroque residence was constructed in the 18th century. Over the ensuing years, the castle was damaged several times by fire but in 1989 it was completely restored and once again shines in all its former glory.

Sitting prominently on a hill overlooking the city and river, Saarbrucken Castle is now the region’s administrative seat as well as a cultural centre and event venue.

Allow a couple of hours to explore the castle complex and the baroque cellar vaults.  Also worth a visit is the Saarbrücken Historical Museum which shows the history of the Saarland from the Middle Ages to the modern day.

3. Town Hall

Address: Rathauspl. 1, 66111 Saarbrücken.

Another immensely beautiful building, the Town Hall of Saarbrücken was built by Georg J. von Hauberrisser between 1897 and 1900 and is decorated with various sandstone statues.

The intricate detailing of this twin hall is mesmerizing and worth a visit. You will explore beautiful murals, intricate wood carvings, and the exceptional stained-glass windows. Don’t forget to climb the bell tower!

The Town Hall is open from Monday to Friday, and the admission is free for everyone.
