Apple strudel

They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach and although neither of us needed it after eating our way around Europe for eight weeks, I decided to surprise my husband with an apple strudel making lesson and tasting at Vienna’s Schonbrunn Palace on the last day of our holiday.

With a German/Austrian background, my hubby is very fond of the Viennese speciality so the chance to watch it being made to its traditional recipe AND to try a piece, was something that went down very well (literally!).

The apple strudel making demonstration is held in the Court Bakery at Schonbrunn Palace

Apple strudel making demonstrations are held hourly from 10am to 5pm each day between March 23 and November 3 (approximately) and take place in the Court Bakery at Schonbrunn Palace.

I pre-purchased our tickets for the demonstration (not included with Schonbrunn Palace entry) prior to leaving Australia but tickets can be bought on the day, subject to availability.  Click here to check prices and reserve your place.  Each show lasts around 20 minutes.

If you are spending a few days in Vienna, this is a fun – and tasty – thing to do!

Our demonstration was given by Connie who showed us how the Palace’s bakery has been making apple strudel to the same recipe for hundreds of years.  Her demonstration was full of humour and involved some crowd interaction and, most importantly, the chance to sample of slice of apple strudel!

The pastry starts as a small ball of dough …..

Then it’s time to fill the pastry

And voila! A delicious Viennese apple strudel

After collecting a copy of the Original Vienna Apple Strudel recipe, our demonstration finished with a delicious slice of apple strudel (“here’s one I prepared earlier!”) served with whipped cream.  Divine!

We both really enjoyed the demonstration and came away determined to make apple strudel just like that when we returned home – unfortunately that hasn’t happened yet!
