My recommended accommodations in Germany

Recommended accomm in Germany

I generally put a fair amount of research into choosing my holiday accommodation before I leave home so when the time spent results in finding a real gem, it’s all worth it! In order to recommend a hotel or other style of accommodation to others, I need to have enjoyed my stay and found it good value for money.

I’ll admit my expectations and budget have increased since my first trip to Europe more than twenty-five years ago, but despite what I pay for a night’s accommodation, if I believe it is good value and I’ve received friendly, helpful service, and a well-equipped room, then I’m happy to share the details with others.

My posts on my recommended accommodations in France, Switzerland, and Austria have been well received, so I hope you’ll find this list of my recommended accommodations in Germany equally as helpful.

My recommended accommodations in Germany

Füssen, Germany

Hotel Schlösskrone

Hotel Schlosskrone, Fussen Rooms at Hotel Schlosskrone are really comfy and are furnished in the traditional Bavarian style.

Having previously booked clients into the Hotel Schlösskrone Füssen when I worked as a travel consultant, I was keen to check out the hotel for myself. Its central location, right where the pedestrianised Old Town (Altstadt) of Füssen begins, is definitely one of its key benefits, making it easy to step outside the hotel and wander the lovely streets.

After parking our car in the underground car park (€10 per day), we settled into our beautiful room which was furnished in the traditional Bavarian style (lots of wood panelling).

The modern bathroom include a separate bath and shower whilst the bedroom area featured a large wardrobe, desk, TV and free WiFi.

There were no tea and coffee making, or ironing facilities. Our room also had a balcony which we unfortunately couldn’t take advantage of as the weather was quite cold.

The only negative for us was the heater behind the bathroom mirror. Every time you turned on the bathroom light, the heater came on, so despite the temperate outside being about 13°C, the bathroom was very hot.

That aside, we loved the added little touches that the family-owned hotel provided – windscreen cleaning gear in the car park was a bonus for drivers and as our stay coincided with the 2014 FIFA World Cup soccer tournament in which Germany were doing very well, earplugs were provided for those who preferred to sleep rather than celebrate with the locals at the outdoor venues nearby.

As well as a bar, which serves lighter meals and pizzas, and the main restaurant which is open all day and where an excellent buffet breakfast is served, the hotel also has its own cafe/bakery specialising in the most delicious cakes and pastries.

There’s also an on-site wellness/spa centre and kids club (charges apply).

Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany

Herrnschlösschen Hotel

Hotel Herrnschlosschen, Rothenburg ob der Tauber Our lovely room, ‘Woodlands’, at Hotel Herrnschlosschen. I wish we could have stayed longer than just one night.

Some hotels really know how to make their guests feel special and that’s exactly what you can expect at the 4* boutique Herrnschlösschen Hotel in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. We were welcomed with a beer and a glass of sparkling wine in the lovely garden by owner Ulrike Wörle who briefed us on the hotel and some suggestions for our visit to the town.

Upon checking in to our room, we were very impressed. Each room has a different theme (ours was “Woodland”) and all are furnished with top quality furnishings, king size beds, desk, a large safe and free WiFi.

The bathroom, with bath, included luxury toiletries, lovely fluffy towels, and a hairdryer.

Unexpected delights included a welcome note from Ulrike, bed turn down with gourmet chocolates left on the bedside (yum!) and a free mini bar (stocked with juice, water and beer). We were also given bottled water upon check out the next day for our onward journey – a very nice touch.

In fine weather, breakfast is served in the garden (we were lucky) and is a la carte style. A good selection of cereals, fruit salad, yoghurt, eggs, meats, cheeses, bread and croissants are available and all are served on beautiful crockery and linen. On not-so-sunny days, breakfast is served in the hotel’s restaurant which is also open for lunch and dinner daily except Mondays and Tuesdays.

Hotel Herrnschlösschen is housed in one of the town’s oldest houses and is located on Herrngasse, the same street as the Käthe Wohlfahrt Christmas Museum, and is just a few steps from Rothenburg’s main square. It has four deluxe rooms and four suites. Car parking is available for a small daily fee.  In a word – amazing!

Landhaus Apartments, Bettenfeld near Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Landhaus Apartments near Rothenburg Landhaus Apartments are close to Rothenburg but in a quiet rural setting.

When you are travelling in Europe and moving to different destinations every couple of days, the novelty of staying in hotels can quickly wear off.  For this reason, when I planned our second visit to Rothenburg ob der Tauber I opted to rent an apartment and stay for a week and it was a great decision.

As soon as we arrived at Ursula and Walter’s Landhaus Apartments just outside of Rothenburg we were made to feel welcome and we quickly settled in to our home away from home.  So much so that on our first full day there, we didn’t even leave the premises!

Ursula and Walter have converted the original farmhouse on Ursula’s family’s farm into six beautifully appointed self-catering apartments.

We stayed in Philosphenweg, a ground floor apartment with two bedrooms, a spacious, open-plan kitchen/dining/living area (with dishwasher, full size refrigerator and oven/stove) which opens onto a paved terrace, and a good sized bathroom.

There are two apartments on the ground floor and four on the first floor, all of which have two bedrooms.  The apartments are tastefully furnished – and impeccably clean – and Ursula has put great thought into providing guests with everything they could possibly need during their stay.

The apartments aren’t air conditioned, but thanks to the position of the building and the shutters on the windows, they house remains cool even when the days are warm.  The large windows in all rooms offer lovely views to the rural landscape and allow you to let in the breeze when you wish.

A good heating system means the apartments are perfect for winter stays when you come to visit the famous Rothenburg Christmas Market.

Also on the ground floor is a communal room which features a real coffee machine so guests can pop in and make themselves a cappuccino at leisure, and the adjoining barn has been converted into a huge games room where you’ll find table tennis, bikes and board games and a large selection of brochures on things to do in the area.

Whilst the apartments don’t have their own washing machine, there are facilities in the basement that guests can use for a small fee.

There is plenty of outdoor space for dining al fresco (there’s a BBQ on site) and for children to play, and the WiFi connection was excellent.

Landhaus Apartments Rothenburg Large windows at Landhaus Apartments makes the rooms light and airy.

Landhaus Apartments are located in the small village of Bettenfeld, just seven kilometres from the centre of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. There are no shops in the village but supermarkets Edeka and Aldi (and Lidl, as of 2020) are just a 10-minute drive away.

If you are looking for a comfortable place to call home when you visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the ‘Romantic Road’ and the beautiful surrounding Franconia region, you won’t be disappointed with Landhaus Apartments.

Colmberg, Germany

Colmberg Castle Hotel

Burghotel Colmberg Colmberg Castle sits on a hill overlooking the town of the same name.

Coming from Australia where white settlement only occurred around 200 years ago, staying in a 1000-year old castle is unique experience but one we were able to enjoy at Colmberg Castle.

Colmberg Castle is located on the ‘Castle Road’, a scenic route that stretches across Germany, and is only 18 kilometres from the well-known town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

The Castle sits on a hill overlooking the town of Colmberg and the beautiful patchwork fields below.  Whilst it dates back at least one thousand years, it is the current owners, the Unbehauen family, who have restored it to its former glory and turned it into a wonderful place to stay.

Our standard double room, called Double Room 1, was quite small (larger rooms and suites are available) but as we were only there for an overnight stay, was more than adequate.  Overlooking the courtyard, it offered great views and had all the basics we needed for our stay – comfy bed, WiFi, small desk and well-appointed bathroom.

There was no air conditioning (but a fan was supplied), tea and coffee provisions or ironing facilities in the room.

Colmberg Castle Hotel Our double room at Colmberg Castle Hotel featured plenty of wood panelling.

We dined al fresco in the courtyard for dinner where many of the meals feature game from the surrounding grounds.  Meals were large, delicious and very reasonably priced.

Breakfast (included in rate) consisted of a cold buffet with the usual European staples of cold meat, cheese and bread, as well as cereal, yoghurt and fruit.

Before departing, we wandered around the castle and grounds admiring the centuries-old stone walls, turreted archways and lovely gardens.  As well as a restored 15th Century Chapel, there are banquet halls and decorations dating back to medieval times, so it’s worth spending a bit of time exploring.

If you fancy staying in a real German castle, Colmberg Castle Hotel is a great choice.

Langenargen, Germany

Seevital Hotel Schiff

Seevital hotel at Lake Constance Our room at Seevital Hotel Schiff on Lake Constance on clean and comfortable – and air conditioned!

We arrived at the Seevital Hotel after ‘escaping’ from a 3rd-floor loft apartment without air conditioning during one of Europe’s heatwaves and the moment we walked into reception we felt at home.

Located right on the lakefront of Lake Constance (known as Bodensee in German), the hotel, in the small town of Langenargen, is ideal for a relaxing stay.  With the lakeside promenade passing in front of the hotel, the ferry terminal just a couple of hundred metres away and the small town centre right on the doorstep, it’s also perfect for a car-free stay.

We stayed in a Comfort Double Room which, whilst reasonably small, was very well appointed.  The bathroom featured a separate toilet and very large shower, as well as hairdryer and toiletries.

The bedroom area included a small desk, WiFi, fridge with mini bar, TV, safe and comfortable bed.  There were no tea and coffee making provisions in the room. Most importantly for us, the room was air conditioned.

Our rate included a delicious buffet breakfast in the ground floor restaurant overlooking the lake (indoor and outdoor seating available).  During the day, the alfresco area becomes a relaxing place to enjoy a drink and in the evenings, wonderful pasta dishes are served.  We ate at the restaurant both nights and thoroughly enjoyed our meals.

The hotel also offers the option to enjoy fine dining at their SEO – Kitchen Craft restaurant.

Other hotel facilities include a lift and wellness centre.  Parking is available just a few hundred metres from the hotel at a reduced rate of €7.50 per day and ironing facilities are available on request.

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and we would have no hesitation in returning to Seevital Hotel Schiff.

Boppard, Germany

Residence Bellevue

Balcony view Residence Bellevue Boppard The view from our balcony at Residence Bellevue.

When deciding where to stay on my visit to Boppard on the Rhine River, my main criteria was to have a river view and I couldn’t have got a better one than at Residence Bellevue.

The property actually has two separate buildings, the main Bellevue Rheinhotel and the Residence Bellevue Apartments.  Both buildings are on the Rhine waterfront and are just 150 metres apart.

The apartments are not true apartments in the sense that they don’t have cooking facilities but they do have three separate rooms – a bedroom, large, modern bathroom and large living area. Our apartment was perfect for our four night stay.

Facilities included tea and coffee making facilities, fridge, wine glasses, toaster and sink, TV, desk, safe and free WiFi. And, very important to me, a balcony with a table and chairs – and wonderful views over the Rhine.  There was no air conditioning but a pedestal fan was supplied, and the room included a couple of column heaters.

Bathroom Residence Bellevue Boppard The bathroom in our apartment at Residence Bellevue in Boppard was large and modern.

Breakfast was available at Le Bristol restaurant at the Rheinhotel and included the usual cold buffet items (cereal, yoghurt, fruit, bread, pastries, cold meat, cheese) and eggs.  We also enjoyed a lovely dinner at Le Bristol one night.

Guests at Residence Bellevue Apartments are welcome to use the Rheinhotel’s indoor pool, sauna and spa.   Undercover parking is available (additional cost) in the Residence building.

For a great location and friendly service from a family-owned business, I highly recommend Bellevue Rheinhotel and Residence Bellevue for your stay in Boppard.

Frankfurt, Germany

Sheraton Frankfurt Airport Hotel

Conveniently located adjoining Frankfurt International Airport, Sheraton Frankfurt Airport Hotel is a great choice when you need somewhere to stay either before or after your flight.

The hotel, which can be accessed by a covered footbridge from the airport’s Terminal 1, is huge, with over 1,000 guest rooms but, despite the size, we found the staff to be friendly and attentive.

Our room, a Premium King room, was quiet and nicely furnished and included a desk, plenty of storage space, safe, tea and coffee making facilities, an iron and ironing board and an extremely comfortable bed with a selection of pillows. A bathtub (with overhead shower) was a nice addition to the bathroom.

WiFi is free for Marriott Bonvoy members and complimentary WiFi is available in the lobby and public areas of the hotel. Other room facilities included air conditioning, Satellite TV, radio, mini bar, hairdryer, bathrobes and late check out (12 noon).

There are two restaurants and a lounge/Sports bar at the Sheraton and although we could still have eaten when we arrived at 10pm, we opted to order room service instead.  The selection and quality was excellent, and the service was fast.

Rather than eating breakfast in the hotel’s Flavors restaurant, we walked across to the airport for a lighter snack.

The Sheraton Frankfurt Airport Hotel lives up to the highly regarded Sheraton reputation and is an excellent place to spend a night pre- or post-flight.
